dc.description Frank Hird was born in 1920 and at the age of 14 left school and worked in a series of mundane jobs. Attendance at night-school enabled him to matriculate in 1941. Hird entered the University of Melbourne, gaining a B.Agr. Sc (Hons) in 1944 and then M.Agr. Sc in 1947. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1953. In 1962, Hird was conferred D.Sc at Melbourne where he became Senior Lecturer in Agricultural Biochemistry. In 1964, Hird was appointed Professor of Biochemistry and served as Dean of the Faculty of Science during 1972. He retired in 1985.
