dc.descriptionVerso: 12 lines of text ln Latin written on vellum in brown ink in a lettre batarde script. Ruled in purple. One two-line illuminated initial 'L' and three one-line initials in blue & white on grounds of red outlined in black and finished with gold penwork. Recto: As Verso with four one-line illuminated initials. Content: The text is from the Hours of the Virgin II, Terce. Verso begins at the last verses of Psalm 119 (KJV 120) before the two-line initial 'L' begins Psalm 120 (KJV 121 ): Levavi oculos meos in mantes: unde veniet auxilium mihi. Auxilium meum a Domino: qui fecit caelum et terram (I have lifted up mine eyes unto the mountains: from whence help shall come to me. My help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.) Books of Hours were prayer books designed for the laity who wished to emulate the cycle of daily devotions followed by the clergy but without taking actual vows. The contents grew out of the psalter but included a mixed variety of other types of material - hymns, lessons, biblical readings, calendars etc. Its central text is the Hours of the Virgin. There are eight Hours (times for prayer): Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers and Compline. Size: Size of leaf: approx. 135x90 mm. Text and illuminated area: approx. 65x50 mm
