These papers relate to research Barrie Pittock undertook for SCOPE (Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment)-ENUWAR (Environmental Consequences of Nuclear War) as co-author for the multi-volume report Environmental Consequences of Nuclear War Volume 1, Physical and atmospheric effects published in 1986. Pittock also published numerous other scientific and popular publications from this research such as Beyond Darkness: Nuclear Winter in Australia (1987) and New Zealand and Nuclear War: The Threat to Australia.
A large portion of the papers consists of secondary research papers, often pre-publication, from a wide range of sources. These are foldered by subject. There is a significant amount of related correspondence with associated scientists and academics, as well as committee papers for the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence, newsletters and ephemera for organisations such as Scientists Against Nuclear War (SANA), ANU Peace Research Centre and Quaker Peace Committee, and media cuttings in relation to nuclear warfare. The last box consists of publications relating to nuclear war, some but not all written or contributed to by Pittock.
