Herbert Tisher Architectural Archive

The digital collection of the Tisher archive is only a small representation of the archive held in the ABP library. These digital objects were selected by the 2018 students of Critical & Curatorial Practices in Design (ABPL90367) for exhibition.

“The material belonged to Herbert Tisher (previously Tichauer) (1915-1998), an émigré architect from Germany. Tisher arrived in Melbourne in July 1938 and began work as an interior designer for the new Hotel Australia in Collins Street. After the war, Tisher commenced work in his own private practice, completing numerous residential projects as well as various commercial designs. Of significance are two realised projects for luxury residential apartment buildings, Toorak Towers (1957-58) and Orrong Towers (1959-61), both in Toorak (and for which there is archival material in this collection). Tisher's work demonstrates a distinct sensitivity toward functionalism and individual expression, as well as an integrated view towards architecture, interior and furniture design.” Lucia Amies on behalf of the students working on the Tisher archive.
