Japanese Postcards Collection

Permanent URI for this collection

This Collection consists of more than 400 postcards commemorating various events in the early 20th century in Japan. Among these are postcards of military and naval manoeuvres, images from the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and the subsequent reconstruction works, images of the sports events at the Meiji Jingu Stadium, images from Japan's occupation of Manchuria and a reprint set of Hiroshige's "53 Stations of the Tokaido" illustrations.

Most of these postcards were purchased for the research purposes of Dr Charles Schencking of the School of Historical Studies. Supporting acquisitions include a WW2 air raid hood, a gas mask, and several pamphlets and posters advising what to do in an air raid.
