These photographs range from late nineteenth century to late twentieth century. The Chinese photographs in the format of postcards are from 1920s. They kept valuable information about the Forbidden City at the time. The two hand-coloured individual Japanese photos date back to around 1890. They capture the red-light district of Yoshiwara, which used to be the cultural centre of Japan and a key site in the history of Japanese woodblock prints. Those two Japanese photo albums are rare examples of uncoloured photographs from the era.
