Hayward family: Correspondence relating to 'Pieterszorg' plantation, Surinam, 2011.0031

Comprises papers, mostly correspondence, between the members of the Hayward family from their plantation ‘Pieterszorg’ in Surinam to Bristol and London, England as well as Rotterdam and Amsterdam, Holland regarding the production, processing and trade of sugar and coffee. Of particular note are details regarding the running of a plantation in the Caribbean and the use of slave labour. These papers spans the period after slavery was abolished in the British Empire (1807) but continued under Dutch colonial rule in Surinam (and elsewhere in the Dutch colonies) until 1863.
