The Australian Capital Territory – home to Australia’s capital city of Canberra. The territory was transferred to the Australian federal government by New South Wales in 1911. An international competition to design the capital city was held, which was won by the Chicago architect Walter Burley Griffin in 1912. The city of Canberra was founded and formally named in 1913.
